A Day in the Life of a Searstone Resident

two senior women taking a walk outdoors around a senior living community

You’ve read the website. You’ve received brochures in the mail. Maybe you’ve attended an event or popped in to talk to a sales counselor. Now you find yourself imagining what your average day would be like if you decided to become a Searstone retirement community resident.

First, at a Life Plan Community like ours, there’s really no such thing as an average day. Oh sure, you’ll still have the usual 24 hours made up of morning, afternoon and night. But as for what you do with those hours? That’s where things get interesting at Searstone.

It’s a good morning.

You wake up to sunlight streaming through your large bedroom window and to the sound of a Carolina chickadee’s birdsong. You’ve got a list of things you want to do today — but first, coffee (or maybe tea). You take your first cup outside onto the balcony of your two-bedroom Lorraine Plaza residence. It’s just one of the many independent living residence options you can choose from at Searstone. No matter which one you choose, they all offer you spacious floor plans, stylish and well-appointed kitchens and an in-residence washer and dryer, to name just a few amenities.

From your balcony, you see the resident swans on the lake. You could watch them for hours, but you remind yourself you’re meeting friends for a water aerobics class at the indoor pool. Better hustle to grab a quick breakfast sandwich from the dining room before you hop in the water.

At the fitness center, you run into a few residents who just returned from a community-sponsored day trip to a nearby winery in Cary (Organized trips are just one example of the senior living amenities you can enjoy as a resident.) You invite your friends to your apartment for an impromptu wine tasting: They bring the reds and whites; you provide the charcuterie. It’s a date.

It’s just before lunch.

You pop back up to your residence; weekly housekeeping has already visited. Perfect timing! Your residence is spick-and-span for the wine tasting this evening. You take a quick shower in your spacious master bathroom and toss your swimsuit in the laundry, conveniently located right in a closet in your bathroom.

Now, what to wear? You’re going for a walk around Lake Searstone with your friend who lives in an Estate Home. Then it’s off to have lunch in the Winston Clubhouse. You love Searstone’s friendly culinary staff and the executive chef, who makes a Cobb salad and knows your special request — always adding chickpeas and extra avocado slices. And the servers never forget you like a lunchtime Arnold Palmer! That attention to your preferences is just one reason you love dining in each of Searstone’s six venues.

Standing in your closet, you decide on your outfit: hiking pants, a nice T-shirt and walking shoes. No, wait. Shorts, a collared shirt and walking sandals. (A quick sidebar here: You absolutely love the convenience of the large walk-in closet that’s just off your bathroom.)

You look out your bay window to check the lake for the swans. They’re gone for the day, and that’s your plan, too.

It’s a busy afternoon.

On your walk around the lake, you run into a couple out walking their dog. They’re forming an ad hoc trivia team for the competition later that afternoon in the Clydesdale game room — you interested? “Of course,” you say, and you make a mental note that you still need to run to the store for charcuterie items.

Turns out the community’s organized transportation is taking residents on a quick run to the Harris Teeter a few minutes away. How fortuitous! You don’t even need to get your car out of your garage. You’re to the grocery store and back at Searstone just before trivia starts. It’s great to live in a Continuing Care Retirement Community like Searstone that provides services including transportation as part of your monthly service fee.

On your way to your apartment to put your cheeses, vegetables and summer sausage in your fridge, a fellow resident stops you in the lobby. Are you going to watch the dragon boat races this weekend? “Of course,” you say, and you already have your ticket. Asia Fest is just one of the many things to do in Cary, NC, that you look forward to every year — the races and all the

street food! The couple mentions they’ll save you a seat on the Searstone bus. Again, why drive yourself when you can ride with friends?

A relaxing evening awaits.

You can’t quite believe it, but your team beats out five other teams to win trivia. You celebrate the victory with appetizers at the White Horse Bar & Grille, and wouldn’t you know it? Happy Hour Trivia is in full swing there! But you can’t stay to play; you have to pick up a book from Searstone’s library that you’ve been waiting for. And you’ve still got to get ready for your wine tasting.

You head back to your apartment to freshen up and prepare your charcuterie board. A friend who lives close by in Calais Terrace at Searstone calls: Do you know how to play Bunco? You laugh and say you taught your grandkids how to play it. You’d love to join for a game or two tomorrow.

As for tonight, the charcuterie board’s ready, wine glasses are out and there’s a knock at the door. Smiles, warm greetings and a few hugs and handshakes. A new couple you haven’t met yet, friends of friends who just moved to Searstone. You have a funny feeling you’ll become fast friends. You trade phone numbers before the night is over and tell them about the Bunco game tomorrow. They’re in.

Wow, what a day!

From your bay window, you see the moon’s starting to rise. A few friends invite you to join them around the fire pit. You’re tempted to take your glass of wine down along with a bag of marshmallows you bought when your grandkids came to visit a couple weeks ago. Who doesn’t love a fire-toasted marshmallow?

But you beg off this time, eager to start on your new library book. You lock your front door, chuckling to yourself. It’s just a habit. No one really locks their doors here; no one really has the need to. You love the safety and security of living at Searstone, which gives you the peace of mind that comes with knowing you, your residence and your community are always looked after by the community’s full-time security professionals.

You turn out the lights in your living room, leaving a reading light on by your bed. And before you tuck yourself in with your library book, you open the curtains just a bit to let the moonlight stream in. When morning comes, the sunlight will come streaming in once again. And you’re already looking forward to whatever tomorrow will bring at Searstone.
